| Zinc is an important mineral that is found in every cell of the
body. More than 300 enzymes in the human body require zinc in order to
function properly. Evidence suggests that many people are not getting
the zinc they need everyday for good health. This is most obvious when
our immune system is weak and we get sick easily.
Zinc has been called the "healing" mineral
that helps the body's immune system. It has been found that
wounds heal at a quicker
rate when there is a sufficient supply of Zinc in the
body. It is therefore recommended that the pre- and
post-operative patient should consider taking a Zinc
supplement providing between 15 - 25 milligrams of the
element per tablet. Zinc therapy has been suggested as a useful adjunct in respiratory infections, burns,
surgeries, and any traumatic injury in which the body must call on its healing capacity. Zinc has been a chief
component of many topical preparations for burns, diaper
rash, and other abrasive conditions. Zinc deficiency can
be manifested as growth retardation and sexual
underdevelopment. Bio-chemically, Zinc is involved in DNA
biosynthesis and is thought to be the activator of collagen synthetase, an enzyme which is necessary for
collagen biosynthesis and hence tissue repair.
