Traditionally, the
blossoms from the red clover plant were used as a tonic
taken in the spring to promote good health and peace of
mind. Red Clover contains small amounts of silica, choline, calcium, and lecithin all essential for normal
body function. Red Clover works as a muscle relaxer and
also is a good expectorant. It is an old-time remedy for eczema.
The herb red clover is often used in Immune system
herbal blends.
Combined with other herbs, red clover is used to treat cancers
and tumors. In the 1940's this herb received a good deal of notoriety because it was included
in herbal healer Harry Hoxsey's anti-cancer formula,
dubbed the "red clover combination".
Hoxsey ran a chain of cancer clinics that were under frequent attack by the American Medical Association. At
that time, the only legitimate treatments for cancer were
surgery or radiation. Although the medical establishment
portrayed Hoxsey as a quack, we now know that many of the
herbs included in his formula have anti-tumor properties.
Modern research also validates the use of luelemia and
Pacific hew for uterine and prostate cancer. Although,
Hoxsey's formula may not have been a cure-all for cancer,
he was a pioneer in incorporating folklore treatments in
modern-day cancer therapy.
