When a fungus like Candida albicans overgrows and infects the vagina, the result is a type of vaginitis commonly called a yeast infection. Because candida is part of the body's normal flora, almost every woman has a yeast infection at some time in her life. The most common yeast infection symptoms include local irritation, a large amount of white, cheesy discharge, and intense itching and burning. The skin around the vagina may be sore and appear red.

Yeast infections are common during pregnancy, when the acidity and sugar content of vaginal secretions are altered. Oral contraceptives, which have a similar effect on the body, also can lead to the development of yeast infections. IUDs or Intrauterine devices can create a more favorable environment for fungal growth by decreasing normal vaginal secretions. Because fungi such as " C. albi" cans thrive in the presence of sugar, women with diabetes are more vulnerable to getting yeast infections then other women.. The over use of antibiotics often leads to yeast infections because antibiotics not only kill infectious bacteria, but they also destroy the "good" bacteria in the body that normally keep the growth of organisms such as candida under control. Yeast infections may also be sexually transmitted. This may be why some women suffer from  chronic and/or recurrent yeast infections. Some women are especially vulnerable to yeast infections following their menstrual periods, due to changes in the vaginal environment from menstrual flow and cyclical hormonal changes. Other factors that can contribute to vaginal yeast infections include allergies, nutritional deficiencies, improper hygiene, and the consumption of refined carbohydrates. A proper diet and nutritional supplementation can help in healing or even prevention of yeast infections and related health problems.

Thrush infections are commonly seen in infants and is not considered abnormal in infants unless it lasts longer than a couple of weeks.

Children, mostly between the ages of 3 - 9 years of age, can be affected by chronic mouth yeast infections, mainly seen around the mouth as white patches and this is not a common condition so should be taken care of.

Symptoms of candidiasis can vary depending on the body area affected. An infection of the vagina or vulva may cause severe itching, burning, soreness, irritation, and a whitish or whitish-gray cottage cheese-like discharge, often with a curd-like appearance. These symptoms are also present in the more common bacterial vaginosis. Symptoms of infection of the male genitalia include red patchy sores near the head of the penis or on the foreskin, severe itching, or a burning sensation. Candidiasis of the penis can also have a white discharge, although this is uncommon.

Candida yeasts are common in people and their growth is normally limited by your  immune system and by other microorganisms, such as bacteria occupying the same areas in the human body. Thus keeping your immune system strong is helpful in preventing yeast infections.

C. albicans was isolated from the vaginas of 19% of otherwise healthy women who experienced few or no symptoms of infection. The external use of detergents or douches or internal disturbances, such as hormonal or physiological, can perturb the normal vaginal flora that consist of lactic acid bacteria, such as lactobacilli, and result in too many Candida cells causing symptoms of infection like local inflammation. Pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives are reported as risk factors for yeast infections. And engaging in vaginal sex immediately and without cleansing after anal sex and using lubricants containing glycerin may also be risky. Diabetes mellitus and the use of anti-bacterial antibiotics have also been linked to an increased incidence of yeast infections. A diet high in simple carbohydrates has been found to affect rates of oral candidiases and hormone replacement therapy and infertility treatments may also be predisposing factors. Also wearing wet swimwear or other clothing for long is also believed to be a risk factor for yeast infections.

A weak or undeveloped immune system or other metabolic illnesses such as diabetes are important  predisposing factors for candidiasis. Diseases or conditions linked to candidiasis include HIV/AIDS, mononucleosis, cancer treatments, steroids, stress, and nutrient deficiency. Almost 15% of personswith a weak immune systems will develop some form of  systemic illness caused by Candida species. In extreme cases, the superficial infections of the skin or mucous membranes can enter into the patient's bloodstream and cause serious systemic Candida infections.

The causes of "penile candidiasis" include sexual intercourse with an infected individual, low immunity, antibiotics, and diabetes. A male genital yeast infection is less common, and the rates of infection is only a fraction of those for women, but yeast infection on the penis from direct contact via sexual intercourse with an infected partner is more common.

Candida species are often part of the human body's normal oral and intestinal flora and treatment with antibiotics may lead to eliminating the yeast's natural competitors for resources, and increase the severity of the condition. Moreover, the higher prevalence of colonization of C. albicans was reported in young individuals with tongue piercing, in comparison to non-tongue pierced peoples. In the western hemisphere around 75% of females are affected with a yeast infection at some point in their life.
