| There are many kinds of fungi
(called candida and tinea) which can infect the
skin and/or mucous membranes; they may also grow under the nails, between toes,
or on the inside surfaces of the colon and other vital organs. Fungal infection
of the skin is most common in places where skin is often moist and one skin
surface is in contact with another, for example the groin area "jock
itch" and between the toes "athlete's foot". However, moist,
possibly itchy, red patches anywhere on the body may also indicate fungal
infection. In babies, a fungal infection like diaper rash makes the skin bright
red in light-skinned babies and darker brown in dark-skinned babies. Fungal
infection of the mouth is called oral thrush, a condition in which creamy
looking white patches form on the tongue and the mucous membranes of the mouth.
If the patches are scraped off, bleeding can happen. This condition is most
common in infants and in those with compromised immune systems. Nursing mothers
sometimes develop a candida infection of the nipples that causes severe pain
while feeding. This can be further complicated if the baby develops oral thrush;
it can lead to a ping-pong type effect in which mother and baby continually
re-infect each other.

|Prevention - keeping the skin clean and dry, as well as
maintaining good personal hygiene, will help prevent larger topical mycoses.
Because fungal infections are contagious then it is important to wash after
touching either other persons or animals. Sports and other clothing should also
be washed after being used. Wearing flip flops when going to a community
swimming pool or shower can also help prevent topical infections.
Yeast infections in the
vagina, caused by candida albicans, may be treated with medicated suppositories
whereas skin yeast infections are treated with medicated ointments. There are
also alternative herbal methods that help support the body's immune system
Antifungal drugs are used to treat fungal infections mycoses. Depending on
the nature of the infection, a topical or systemic agent may be used.
Photochemotherapy or photopheresis are other methods used at medical centers for
the treatment of mycosis fungoides.
An example of antifugal drugs are fluconazole, or Diflucan, which are
the basis of many of the over-the-counter anti-fungal treatments. Another
is amphotericin B which is more potent and it is used in the treatment of the
most severe fungal infections that show resistance to other forms of treatment
and it is often administered intravenously.
Drugs to treat skin infections are Tolnaftate / Tinactin, an over the counter
topical, Ketoconazole, especially used to treat tinea versicolor and other
dermatophytes, Itraconazole, Terbinafine / Lamisil; Echinocandins / caspofungin,
Griseofulvin, commonly used for scalp and nails infections.
Doctor's Comments about Drugs
"The person who takes medicine must recover twice, once
from the disease and once from the medicine." William Osler, M.D.
"The cause of most disease is in the poisonous drugs
physicians superstitiously give in order to effect a cure." Charles E.
"If all the medicine in the world were thrown into the sea,
it would be bad for the fish and good for humanity."
O.W. Holmes, (Prof. of Medicine Harvard University)
"Every drug increases and complicates the patients
condition." Robert Henderson, M.D.
"In sickness the body is already loaded with impurities. By
taking drug - medicines more impurities are added, thereby the case is further
embarrassed and harder to cure." Elmer Lee, M.D.
"The necessity of teaching mankind not to take drugs and
medicines, is a duty incumbent upon all who know their uncertainty and injurious
effects; and the time is not far distant when the drug system will be
abandoned." Charles Armbruster, M.D.

You would not think of exposing yourself to an Atomic Bomb fallout or
excessive X-rays. But not getting enough vitamins and minerals is just as
dangerous. Cells in your body not getting their vitamins and minerals suffer
both DNA and mitochondrial damage. These cells under a microscope look like they
have been hit with radiation. This type of damage may cause you to age faster
