Sexual
impotence in men is a fairly well known disorder, however, for women it is
not often discussed. This maybe because men who are impotent are unable to
have sex, but women with sexual dysfunction are usually able to have sex
but are not interested or don’t really enjoy it. Though the common
belief is that women have psychological rather than physical reasons for
sexual dysfunction (see also frigidity) and
this may be true in some cases, however, women also have physical causes
that may interfere with their ability to enjoy sex. Possible causes
include side effects from drugs such as antidepressants or sedatives,
hormonal insufficiency, painful intercourse, or adrenal insufficiency.
Women experiencing sexual dysfunction should consult a physician to
attempt to find its cause, as the problem may indicate a more serious
disorder. Conventional treatments for sexual dysfunction include:
counseling when the cause is psychological; switching or reducing dosage
of drugs; hormone replacement therapy if there is a deficiency; treating
the cause of painful intercourse; and correcting adrenal insufficiency.

TREATMENTS
Although there is just preliminary usage of natural treatments for sexual dysfunction, several
items have shown good results in preliminary trials. These include
Arginine, DHEA,
and Ginkgo biloba..
1. DHEA - the hormone DHEA also called "dehydroepiandrosterone" may be helpful for sexual dysfunction in
older women and women who have adrenal failure. However, we strongly advise physician supervision when using this substance.
DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands. Levels of DHEA decline naturally with age, and fall precipitately
in cases of adrenal failure, Because both elderly people and those with adrenal insufficiency report a drop in libido, several studies have examined whether supplemental DHEA can increase libido in these groups.
The safety of DHEA in young children and pregnant or nursing women has not been established.
The bottom line: DHEA may be effective, but it should be used only under a doctor’s supervision.
2. Ginkgo biloba - numerous case reports and preliminary studies suggest that the herb Ginkgo biloba may be an effective treatment for
antidepressant related or induced sexual dysfunction. Investigation of ginkgo began after an elderly man with sexual dysfunction caused by an antidepressant decided to take Ginkgo biloba to improve his memory. His sexual function improved
unexpectedly and very dramatically and that got the attention of researchers. Subsequent open trials found benefits in men and
even greater benefits in women. However, double-blind
placebo controlled studies are needed to reliably evaluate the potential benefits of ginkgo in treating antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. Keep in mind that ginkgo is a “blood thinner” that can increase risk of bleeding, especially if combined with blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin
"Coumadin", heparin, and also aspirin.
3. Arginine - is an amino
acid and can help increase blood flow and thus sensitivity in
clitoral area.
