Hemorrhoids occur often during
pregnancy and also after childbirth. Hormonal changes and pressure
exerted by the growing fetus may be the cause. About, 50% of all
Americans have had hemorrhoids by the time they reach 50 years old. The
incidence increases with age until 70 then begins to decrease again. The
most common symptoms of hemorrhoids include: pain, burning, itching,
inflammation, irritation, seepage, bleeding, and swelling. The bleeding,
which is often a bright red color during bowel movements, might be
scary. Although it does signal that something is wrong in the digestive
system, rectal bleeding is not always an indicator of serious disease.
But it does indicate that proper action should be taken.
There are several types of
hemorrhoids, based upon location, severity, and level of pain,
discomfort, or aggravation they cause. They are:
1. INTERNAL - are located
inside the rectum area. They are normally painless, however,
tend to bleed and the blood appears bright red.
2. EXTERNAL - these develop
under the skin at the anal opening. They normally form a hard
lump and cause painful swelling. When an external hemorrhoid
swells, the tissue in the area becomes firm but very sensitive
and often turns a blue or purple color. This kind of
hemorrhoid usually happens with younger people and may be very
painful.
3. PROLAPSED - a prolapsed
hemorrhoid is an internal hemorrhoid that collapses and
protrudes outside the person's anus, often with a mucous
discharge and heavy bleeding. Prolapsed hemorrhoids can become
thrombosed which means - they form clots within that prevent
their receding. Thrombosed hemorrhoids may be very very
painful.
