Backache also called "Lumbago" effects almost 80% of adults sometime, it
is one of the most common reasons for people to go to the hospital. It is now believed that the main cause of back
pain is simple muscle strain. It may appear the backache happened suddenly but the problem may develop
over a long period of time. Poor diet and nutrition can be contributing factors. When muscles
contract both lactic and pyruvic acid are produced from muscle activity. The presence of the lactic acid
causes the feeling of fatigue after strenuous work. If the levels of these acids get high enough then they
cause irritation and this leads to pain. This is all made worse by dehydration, not drinking enough
water. Backaches may also have a psychological aspect such as a deep seated emotional or stress
related problem. Kidney, bladder, female pelvic disorders, and prostate problems
can also be causes of
back pain. ...more

For many years, it was assumed that
back pain was normally the result of spinal degeneration or
injury, often damage to the intervertebral disks. These
are structures located between the vertebrae that sort of act
like cushions. Each of these disks consists of a tough, fibrous outer layer
surrounding a soft interior, which is what gives the
cushioning. With the ordinary wear and tear of life, the
disks show signs of aging and may be
injured. When a disk begins to degenerate, a strain even
something as small as a sneeze could cause a disk to herniate
or rupture, allowing the soft interior material to protrude
out of the disk and press against the spinal cord. This
situation is sometimes incorrectly called a
"slipped disk." A herniated disk may very well cause
severe intermittent or constant back pain. However, it is
difficult to pinpoint disk disease as the cause of most cases
of back pain. That is because most adults over 40 years of
age, whether they experience back pain or not can be shown to
have some degree of disk degeneration. Futhermore, in many
cases, disk degeneration and even herniation do not produce
any symptoms It is now believed that a factor of back
pain is also simple muscle strain Although symptoms may come on
suddenly and can be acutely painful, this is actually a
problem that develops over a long period of time When muscles
contract, lactic acid and pyruvic acid are produced as
byproducts of human muscular activity. It is the presence of lactic
acid in the muscles that produces the familiar sensation of
muscle fatigue following strenuous activity or work. If high levels of
these acidic by products accumulate in the muscles, they cause
irritation that can eventually turn into pain and interfere
with the normal conduction of electrical impulses in the
muscle tissue. This results in a phenomenon called delayed
onset muscle soreness. Problems with acidic buildup are
often made worse by dehydration, not drinking enough water. Most cases of back pain also
have an important psychological component, usually a deep
seated emotional problems or stress
related problems. Other contributors to back pain can include poor
posture, bad shoes/footwear and poor walking habits, improper
lifting, straining, lack of calcium, slouching when
sitting, and sleeping on a mattress that is too soft. Kidney,
bladder, and prostate
problems, female pelvic disorders, and even constipation
may produce back pain. Chronic conditions that can cause back
pain include arthritis,
rheumatism, bone disease, and abnormal curvature of the spine.
Fractures are rarely the cause of back pain. Good nutrition,
diet, and drinking plenty of water are all great preventative
and healing things to do.
