Alcoholism is a chronic health
condition indicated by a dependence on alcohol which is actually a drug. This
dependence can be physiological, psychological, or a combination of both.
On an estimated 75% of the American population that consumes alcohol, 1 in 10
people may be expected to have a problem with alcohol consumption. Alcoholism
currently affects approximately 4 times as many men as women, but the incidence
of alcoholism among women has been rising, and is also rising with children,
teens, high school, and college students. Alcohol can affects people
differently. Some may become intoxicated with the first drink; other people may
be able to drink 4 to 5 alcoholic drinks before showing any effects. In
alcoholics, every drink triggers a craving for another drink. Alcoholics
who quit drinking often experience withdrawal symptoms, especially during the
first week. Anxiety, insomnia,
hallucinations, convulsions, rapid pulse, heavy perspiration, and fever may
occur. After a while, these symptoms go away and the alcoholic has to learn to
not fall back into drinking and to solve their problems other ways. Dietary
nutritional supplements, while important for everyone, are critical for
alcoholics. Alcoholics need to supplement all the known vitamins and minerals.

| Alcoholism is called a dual disease because it includes
both mental and physical aspects. The biological mechanisms that cause
alcoholism are not well understood. Social environment, stress,
mental health, family history, age, ethnic group, and gender all influence the
risk for the condition. Long term abuse of alcohol causes changes in the brain's
structure and chemistry such as tolerance and physical dependence. These changes
hurt the person with alcoholism's ability to stop drinking and result in alcohol
withdrawal syndrome when the person stops. Alcohol damages almost every organ in
the body, including the liver, kidneys, brain, and more.. The toxic effects of
chronic alcohol abuse can cause both medical and psychiatric problems.
Identifying alcoholism is hard because of the social stigma associated with
the disease that causes people with alcoholism to avoid diagnosis and treatment
for fear of shame or social consequences. The normal responses to a group of
standardized questioning is a common method for diagnosing alcoholism. These can
be used to identify bad drinking patterns, including alcoholism. In general,
problem drinking, is considered alcoholism when the person continues to drink
even when they wish to stop; because of social or health problems caused by
drinking. |
|
The treatment of alcoholism takes several steps. Because of the medical
problems that can be caused by withdrawal, alcohol detoxification is carefully
controlled and may involve medications such as benzodiazepines such as diazepam
/ valium. Persons with alcoholism also may have other addictions, including
addictions to benzodiazepines, which may complicate this step. After
detoxification, other support such as group therapy or self help groups are used
to help the alchoholic person remain sober. Thombs (1999) states according to
behavioral sciences alcoholism is described as a maladaptive behavior. He
explains this must not be confused with misbehavior. Behavioural scientists
explain that addicts have a behavior pattern that may lead to destructive
consequences for themselves, their families and society. This does not label
addicts as bad or irresponsible. Women are more sensitive then men to alcohol's
harmful physical, cerebral, mental, and other harmful effects.

You would not think of exposing yourself to an Atomic Bomb fallout or
excessive X-rays. But not getting enough vitamins and minerals is just as
dangerous. Cells in your body not getting their vitamins and minerals suffer
both DNA and mitochondrial damage. These cells under a microscope look like they
have been hit with radiation. This type of damage may cause you to age faster
and can lead to Cancer
and other degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and others.
