| Growing older is not an illness or
disease, but the increasing years do make the human body more vulnerable to
disease. People's genes tell the body's cells to quit dividing after they have
divided between 20 and 30 times. New cells must be created to replace dying
cells and this process slows as a person ages. Additionally, existing cells are
subject to damage and early death. When there are no longer enough new cells to
replace cells that have died or taken damage, the result is what we call aging.
The free radical theory of aging has been an area of much research in
recent years, and it has been gaining increasing acknowledgement. Free radicals
are atoms or groups of atoms that are both highly reactive and extremely
unstable. If they occur in large amounts, they start attacking the body down on
the cellular level. Free radicals attack the cells' protective membranes and
genetic material like the nucleic acids DNA and RNA, causing cell damage and
cellular malfunction. |

|
Compounding the problem, the immune system may then attack the damaged cells
treating them like foreign invaders. Because free radicals are so chemically
reactive, they only exist for about a millionth of a second. This makes it hard
for researchers to study them directly. But because there are millions of them,
they do considerable damage to our cells in their short life span. Doctor Denham
Harman, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Nebraska, is considered the founder of
the free radical theory of aging. Dr. Harman postulated that many of the
degenerative disorders we associate with aging, including cancer
and hardening of the arteries, high
blood pressure, are not inevitable results of the passage of time, but
rather are the result of nucleic acid breakdown, proteins, and cell
structures caused by the presence of these free radicals

| Life extension science, also known as anti-aging medicine,
experimental gerontology, and biomedical gerontology, is the study of slowing
down or reversing the aging process to extend both the maximum and average
lifespan. Some of the researchers in this arena including life
extensionists or longevists (who want to have longer lives for
themselves), believe that future break-thrus in tissue rejuvenation with stem
cells, molecular repair, and organ replacement such as with artificial organs or
xenotransplantations will eventually enable humans to have indefinite lifespans
"agerasia" through complete rejuvenation to a healthy youthful
condition.
But currently these things are not available to the public and will likely be
very expensive. The best course of action is to eat well, drink good quality
water, exercise, and take nutritional and herbal supplements to keep all body
systems in good functioning order.
Much life extension research focuses on nutrition, diets, or supplements as a
means to extend lifespan, although the longevity effects are not well published.
The many diets promoted by anti-aging advocates may even be contradictory. Two
diets with different approaches and some support from scientific research are
the paleolithic diet and caloric restriction.
The free-radical theory of aging suggests that antioxidant supplements, such
as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Q10, lipoic acid, carnosine, and N-acetylcysteine,
might extend human life. Other substances proposed to extend lifespan include
oxytocin, insulin, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and erythropoietin (EPO).
Resveratrol is a sirtuin stimulant that appears to extend lifespan in simple
organisms such as nematodes and short-lived fish. Some supplements, including
the minerals selenium or zinchave been reported to extend the lifespan of rats
and mice, though none has been proven to do so in humans, and significant toxic
effects were observed. Metformin may also extend life span in mice. |

Hormone treatments -
The anti-aging industry offers several different hormone therapies. And some
of these have been criticized for possible dangers to the patient and a lack of
proven effect. For example, the American Medical Association has been critical
of some anti-aging hormone therapies. But there is also concern that much
research is meant to hide or distort the facts from the public so they do not
learn the possible benefits that could extend their life.
Even if some recent clinical studies have shown that low-dose Growth Hormone
(GH) treatment for adults with GH deficiency changes the body composition by
increasing muscle mass, decreasing fat mass, increasing bone density and muscle
strength, improves cardiovascular parameters (decrease of LDL cholesterol), and
affects the quality of life without significant adverse side effects. The
evidence for use of growth hormone as an anti-aging therapy is mixed and based
on animal studies. An early study suggested that supplementation of mice with
growth hormone increased average life expectancy. But additional animal
experiments have suggested that growth hormone may generally act to shorten
maximum lifespan; mice lacking the receptor for growth hormone live especially
long. And mouse models lacking the insulin-like growth factor also live
especially long and have low levels of growth hormone.

"The necessity of teaching mankind not to take drugs and

You
have a wonderful human body that when given the right nutrients in the right
amounts can heal itself.
"Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet
alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it
appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements." - JAMA
Journal of the American Medical Association 6/12/2002 Vol 287
There are
hundreds of studies which show the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other top
killers is reduced by eating more than just the minimal RDA standards.
Prevention
is the main defense from disease. Detoxification and having proper nutritional
balance is the treatment. Natural foods, herbs, vitamins and supplements to
support your body's natural healing.

You would not think of exposing yourself to an Atomic Bomb fallout or
excessive X-rays. But not getting enough vitamins and minerals is just as
dangerous. Cells in your body not getting their vitamins and minerals suffer
both DNA and mitochondrial damage. These cells under a microscope look like they
have been hit with radiation. This type of damage may cause you to age faster
and can lead to Cancer
and other degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and others.
